25 Windows Hidden Tools You Seldom Use

Posted by X.E.R.O

Are you a Windows XP User ? How many utilities do you know that is built-in Windows XP ? Notepad, Wordpad, Character 25 Windows Hidden ToolsMap, Calculator, Microsoft Paint, these are the few utilities that I usually use.But out of blue,Windows Xp is a fully loaded package which has a lot of apparently hidden utilities which are seldom accessed by a basic or normal computer users ; and trust me,they still pack a lot of punch.

To run any of these apps go to Start > Run and type the executable name (i.e. charmap) and press Enter.

Character Map (charmap.exe) - Very useful for finding unusual characters.

Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr.exe) – The usual Disc cleanup.

Clipboard Viewer (clipbrd.exe) - Views contents of Windows clipboard.

Dr Watson (drwtsn32.exe) - Troubleshooting tool, runs when windows crashes.

DirectX diagnosis (dxdiag.exe) - Diagnose & test DirectX, video & sound cards.

Private character editor (eudcedit.exe) - Allows creation or modification of characters.

IExpress Wizard (iexpress.exe) - Create self-extracting / self-installing package.

Microsoft Synchronization Manager (mobsync.exe) - Appears to allow synchronization of files on the network for when working offline. Apparently undocumented.

Windows Media Player 5.1(mplay32.exe) - Retro version of Media Player, very basic.

ODBC Data Source Administrator (odbcad32.exe) – Database connection utility for support with external servers, create ODBC data sources,to administer remote databases or for supporting the ODBC database utility in Visual basic language.

Object Packager (packager.exe) - To do with packaging objects for insertion in files, appears to have comprehensive help files.

System Monitor (perfmon.exe) - Very useful, highly configurable tool, tells you everything you ever wanted to know about any aspect of PC performance, for budding uber-geeks only.

Program Manager (progman.exe) - Legacy Windows 3.x desktop shell.

Remote Access phone book (rasphone.exe) - Documentation is virtually non-existent.

Registry Editor (regedt32.exe or regedit.exe) – For making custom changes or hacking the Windows Registry.

Network shared folder wizard (shrpubw.exe) - Creates shared folders on network.

File signature verification tool (sigverif.exe) - This tool will search the operating system and identify any unsigned device drivers installed on the system. It will also verify all signed device drivers.

Volume Control (sndvol32.exe) - I've included this for those people that lose it from the System Notification area.

System Configuration Editor (sysedit.exe) - Modify System.ini & Win.ini just like in Win98! .

Syskey (syskey.exe) - Secures XP Account database, use with care, it's virtually undocumented but it appears to encrypt all passwords, I'm not sure of the full implications.

Microsoft Telnet Client (telnet.exe) – Built in telnet client which can be used to connect to servers to sent emails or to hack :) This is disabled in in vista  but you can re-enable it by going to

Control panel –> Programs and Features –> Click "Turn Windows features on or off" on left –> Scroll down and check "Telnet Client.

Driver Verifier Manager (verifier.exe) - Seems to be a utility for monitoring the actions of drivers, might be useful for people having driver problems. Undocumented.

Windows for Workgroups Chat (winchat.exe) - Appears to be an old NT utility to allow chat sessions over a LAN, help files available.

System configuration (msconfig.exe) - Can use to control startup programs, make changes to startup of XP.

Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) - Used to manage group policies, and permissions. Its an Administrator only tool.

I hope it was informative.I would like to hear your comments on the above topic.

Unlock Yahoo when Account is Blocked

Posted by X.E.R.O

I found this whilst stumbling through net,It seemed to me a very useful known trick but still worthwhile to post it Unlock Yahoo when Account is Blockedhere. When you or someone else enters an incorrect login multiple times then Yahoo! locks the account for "security reasons" and you are unable to access your chat names. Cool thing is that, these are a piece of cake to unlock. All you need is a list of Yahoo servers to log in with. Every time you login, you are using what's called a server to access yahoo. You login with a cookie, which is sort of like an information packet or ID proving that you are who you claim to be, and the account is yours.

When people attempt to log your name in multiple times with a locking tool, all they are doing is logging in over and over with an incorrect password until your cookie expires, which means you will no longer be allowed to login. So, when you find yourself locked, what you need to do is refresh your cookie. But how can you do that when the yahoo server you were using has blocked you?

Simple, find another server. Yahoo has servers all over the place. There are more than I'd care to count. I'll include a pretty decent sized list with this tutorials. All you have to do is paste one of these servers in your browser and log in on the page you see. Unless you have been locked on that server as well, you will receive a fresh cookie and will be able to log in to messenger again.

Tons of people try to go through their email and login there to unlock an account, but a smart locker will shut down your mail server first, then cut off your chat server. Most people don't know what to do if the email is blocked, so they give up trying. That's why I don't even bother with the email method. I simply pick another server, log in, and I'm good to go. There are so many servers out there that it is impossible to lock them all. Even if they could, the lock is only for about 12 hours, and then you're back in business.

Disable Writing to USB Drives

Posted by X.E.R.O

A common security concern at organizations is allowing users to plug in a usb flash drive, because they could so easily copy corporate data.Since Windows XP SP2, you can disable writing to USB devices altogether using a simple registry hack.however one should also note that if you are using this trick, you should make sure that the users are not administrators on the computer, because they could easily change this setting back.

Here it is:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies]
"WriteProtect"=dword:00000001

Paste the code into a notepad file, and then save it as a registry file.Double click it and voila, you have successfully prevented the write access to the USB drive.

Once you have double clicked the registry, you will have to reboot for the changes to take effect.

This works on Windows Vista as well. Here's the window you'll get when you try and write to a USB drive:

Disable Writing to USB Drives

If you want to enable the write access again, then copy this code and paste the code into a notepad file, and then save it as a registry file.Double click it and write access will be enabled again.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies]
"WriteProtect"=dword:00000000'

Stay tuned for more tips and hacks.

Buying Digital Camera – A Definitive guide

Posted by X.E.R.O

Prologue

Its Holiday season again and I know You will be itching to buy a new gadget this time.Recession has made us a little conservative on resources but we are never too late to satisfy our gadget hunger.Digital cameras have gotten cheap now days. With the flurry of available products and loads of camera jargon is sure to drive you crazy if you are buying them this fall.Brace up,here is a definitive guide to buy a digital camera.Buying Digital Camera – A Definitive guide

Megapixels

When it comes to megapixels, the more the better. I recommend a minimum of 2, but 3 or 4 is great. We did a test to see if a camera with 2.3 megapixels (actually 1.92 - 1600 x 1200) could produce a good quality 8x10. Make sure its the actual resolution not the software enhanced resolution.

Turns out it can, if you have the right paper and printer. We used HP Premium Plus photo paper with an HP 970 series printer and made a fantastic 8 x 10. The resolution at 8x10 (we had to crop in to make the picture proportional to 8x10) was only 150 DPI. Most printers would not make a real good 8x10 at that resolution, but this one did. So, if you want to be sure you can get good 8 x 10s, you may want to go with a 3 megapixel camera or better (that gives you around 200 DPI at 8x10 size, still not quite the optimum 300 DPI, but it looks good with the right printer).

Optical VS Digital Zoom

The optical zoom magnifies (zooms in) using glass.Zoom (range encompassing at least 36mm to 130mm, 35mm equivalent) is necessary requisites for camera’s of today. The digital zoom basically crops out the edge of the picture to make the subject appear closer, causing you to lose resolution or to get an interpolated resolution (i.e. the camera adds pixels). Neither of which help image quality.

Finally, make sure you get enough (optical) zoom. A 2x zoom isn't going to do much for you. A 3x is the average you'll find in most digital cameras will probably be good for most uses. More on lenses later.

Connection

How does the camera connect to your computer? USB is a must have for any digital camera Firewire is the way to go if your PC suports If you have a USB port in your computer, you'll want a camera that can connect via USB as opposed to a slow serial connection.Firewire is the way to go if your pc supports it,its the fastest means to transfer the data from your digital device to your pc.

Storage

Most cameras use removable storage memory to record images. The most popular forms of removable storage memory are Compact Flash cards, Sony Memory Sticks, and Smart Media Cards. Most digital cameras come with one 16MB card. The capacity (size) of the image memory storage will determine how many images you can store.Compact Flash, Memory Stick, xD-Picture Card, or SD/HC are the cards that are supported by the camera’s of today.Thers is a flurry of Digital Camers available today

LCD Viewfinders

Most digital cameras are equipped with a liquid-crystal display (LCD) viewfinder that allows you to see what your picture will look like before you take it. LCD viewfinders also permit you to view saved images and delete the ones that you don't like.

Picture Formats

When you're trying to decide on which digital camera to get, check and see how many different picture formats it supports.

You want something that can produce both uncompressed (usually TIFF) and compressed (usually JPEG) images. I personally use the high quality JPEG setting on my camera for most of my shooting. TIFFs are just too big and the difference in quality is not ascertainable by mere mortals.

You also want to be able to shoot at a lower resolution than the camera's maximum. That way, If you're running short on memory, you can squeeze a few more shots on your memory stick.

Auxiliary Lens / Flash

This was a biggie for me. While a 3x zoom may work for the "average" user, I needed something that allowed me to do some wide angle work as well as have a good telephoto lens.Automatic, fill, red-eye reduction are type of lens modes to look for in a digital camera. Keep in mind Auxiliary Lens / Flash

In addition to lenses, good flash is a must have for a digital camera.. The flash that is built into most of these cameras gives you a top range of 15-20 feet - at best. If you need more reach than the small built in flash can deliver, then make sure you can attach an external flash to any camera you consider. As an added bonus, if you get a camera that can take an external flash, you can place that flash on a bracket and eliminate red-eye.

Battery Life/Power

Limited battery life is one of the biggest problems with digital cameras. The more you use the LCD viewfinder, the faster you will go through batteries. Many digital cameras are packed with battery chargers and rechargeable batteries, but some are not. Rechargeable batteries and a charger will typically add from $30 to $100 to the cost of a digital camera.

ISO

The ISO reading indicates how sensitive your camera is to the light. A higher ISO indicates you can take pictures at low light too, but at the expense of quality. Higher ISO is especially useful in taking pictures indoors or in parties. For film cameras, you would have to buy film with certain ISO ratings. But in dig cams you can set this value when you are shooting(if the feature is available).

Flash Distance

Speaking of flashes, make sure you check the distance the built in flash is good for. You don't want a camera with a wimpy flash that only travels a few feet (well, unless you can get an external flash for it as described above).

Battery Type

This may not sound important, but it is. Anyone who owns a digital camera can tell you they eat batteries the way a Buying Batteries DO matter!!!!sumo wrestler eats at a buffet. Make sure the camera can run on regular (or rechargeable) "AA" type batteries. You don't want a camera that eats through expensive lithium batteries every 10 shots or so.

One thing to remember about digital cameras, they do eat through batteries. I recommend getting some Nickel Metal Hydride rechargeable for it. I have some for mine and they have saved me a fortune.

Epilogue

Choosing a digital camera is not easy, but still I think you have enough metal to cut your teeth through the market. Finally, buy the BEST camera you can possibly afford or wait until the price drops on one with the type of features you want.

I hope you get the best out there.

Till then Keep learning.

Flash Tutorial Links

Posted by X.E.R.O

Most of the times I have been intrigued by the quality of flash based games and animations which appear on net and dazzle the netizens.I always thought of learning Adobe Flash (previously Macromedia flash) and to create my own animations and games. However, due to lack of good tutorials I wasn’t able to learn much about it and my bandwidth Adobe Flash Tutorial Linksdon’t permits me to download all the video tutorials the deviants of flash had to offer. So I have compiled a list of tutorials and resource website which offer fantastic flash resources and tutorials for those who crave for them.
I found these flash actionscript tutorials while stumbling across the net. Many of them are game design, sound and server side specific.Others are more general.
I hope you enjoy them whilst making full use of them and most important,I hope you share your flash tutorial bookmarks too !!!

How to Determine If the One You Love Loves You

Posted by X.E.R.O

Love is in the air and all you need is love..” Please your ssweetheart using dating tips - Read more dating articles at PROHACK

Its been a long time since I have published something in the dating section,I was surfing net and (suddenly) I realized that Hackers/PC users do have a heart :P . I m too pursuing a sweet girl nowadays and I thought sharing my views might be useful …

Do you love someone ? Does his/her sight gives you butterflies ? (sorry for south park lines :) ) well If you like someone, but you're unsure whether they feel the same way, it might help to find out. Here are a few tips for solving the mystery.

  • Make eye contact with other person. If he or she doesn't look into your eyes, that may not be a good sign; but there's no need to call it off just yet.
  • Talk to her . If he/she fidgets and looks away from you, then its a sign that he/she may not be interested or she/he might just be nervous.
  • If possible, dance with another person. If he/she looks away from you and talks to another person, then he/she may not be interested, or may not be having fun.
  • Go out with a group of friends including him or her. If this person stays close to you throughout the night, and talks with you a lot, this may be a sign they are interested.
  • Ask him/her Directly. If all else fails, and you really need to know the other person's feelings, you may have to come right out and ask. Just be prepared for disappointment if it doesn't work out.
  • The only way to know if someone really loves you, is if they accept you for everything that you are. Nothing more and nothing less. No one is perfect but true love accepts the imperfections.

Please Keep in mind that -

  • Don't spend too much time talking to the person or they will guess your feelings for them (unless you want them to know that you like them). However, you'll need to spend some time with the person so that you can observe how he or she responds to you.
  • Make sure you have a good relationship with his/her friends. They can have a big influence on their decision.
  • If your crush is always distant from you (never wants to hold hands, kiss, or ask how you are feeling), he or she may be wanting to end the relationship, but might be scared of breaking your heart.

However,be warned that -

  • Don't make it too obvious that you like the person. This may turn some people off if you come on too strong.
  • Don't try to manipulate others to love you, it doesn't work.

Gudluck :)

How To Make Your Own Radio station

Posted by X.E.R.O

Love to listen to internet radio ? Have a great collection of music ? Wanna be a DJ ? or just wanna make others experience your great collection of music ? lets get it going..and get ready to rap, roll and obviously broadcast…

Here is what you need -How To Make Your Own Radio station - PROHACK

Firstly, your internet speed has to be at least 64 kbps or above (which means Dial-up users, who will be having a lot of latency, will not be able to setup) . Secondly, you going to have to have a domain, an updated one with the current IP active.

Download the Shoutcast files and install them in any order.

Now navigate to

START > PROGRAM FILES > SHOUTcast DNAS > EDIT SHOUTCAST DNS CONFIG.

Configuring Shoutcast -

  • Go Down and where it says Password : change (set it something you can remember..duh.)
  • The Portbase : change it to whatever port you want it
  • Maxusers : (lets be realistic here, dnt put in 10000, like NXS's radio station) your bandwidth has to be extremely good, if your cable, 50 user max is ok, ADSL should stay below 10 users, and T1 connections should do whatever tickles your fantasy.

EDIT > SAVE

  • Now Open winamp and right click it or press ctrl + P

RIGHT CLICK > OPTIONS > PREFRENCES > DSP EFFECT > and choose the NULLSOFT SHOUTCAST.

  • Now Go to OUTPUT, and then click on Connection.
  • Through the ADDRESS, type your address which you have done through www.no-ip.com, PORT NUMBER, whatever u did in the EDIT.txt, and your password.
  • Then go to Encoder, and choose your quality of your music.
  • Now Go back to

OUTPUT > OUTPUT CONFIG > YELLOW PAGES

This is your advertisement information. Write whatever you like there.

Now Connect. To check that your Radio on-line go to http://(your address that you added in the preference).

Cheers, you have successfully created your own radio station, tell others about it to tune into it and enjoy…

Cheers and Keep learning.

Proxies and Chaining Wingates To Surf Internet Anonymously

Posted by X.E.R.O

This is a tutorial on chaining proxies for the use of becoming more anonymous while online. There aren’t enough tutorials online about this subject so I decided to make an attempt at writing one. Since it’s on the subject, I included a section on chaining wingates to become anonymous on telnet. Download Wingate from download.com
I’m going to assume that most of you have already used a proxy before to hide your real IP address or domain or maybe just used one to surf anonymously online. If you didn’t, well hopefully you can keep up and possibly learn how to use a proxy. Its also best if you know what an IP address or Domain is first, before reading this tutorial. Hmm, I guess I have to show you where to find a proxy too. Well I find that good, updated proxy websites are…

It will be up to you to figure out which ones work or not. I’m not going to do all the work for you .

Proxy Servers
A proxy is a server that acts as a gateway between your computer and your destination (website, IRC chat, etc.). These proxies receive requests from users to view, for example, a web page. The proxy will then forward the request to the internet, find your requested page, then send the web page back to you, the user. Most proxies come with a cache (sounds like “cash”) feature that saves former websites that were visited on that proxy. Think of cache as a proxy’s storage room. Each site that you make the proxy visit, it saves in its own storage area (cache). So if the user or someone else requests the same site again later on, the proxy will go back into its cache, find the web page and send it back to the user. This saves time because the proxy doesn’t have to go search the Internet for the web page. It just pulls the site out of its cache.

The use of proxies to stay anonymous is a favorite thing to do among people on the Internet who are either paranoid or just security conscious. The anonymity factor comes from the proxy’s ability to hide your true Internet address. For example, if I were to run a scan on your computer right now, I would get the Internet address that was given to you by your ISP (internet service provider), but if I were to scan you while you were using a proxy, then I would get the Internet address of the proxy server. Basically the whole proxy picture looks like this…

[User]>>>>>[Proxy]>>>>>[Web Pages]

Simple enough, right? Right. So now let’s get to the chaining part.

Proxy Chaining
Proxy chaining is merely connecting to more than one proxy and then to your intended destination. You can use as many proxy servers as you can or want. The more you have, the more anonymous you will be. Remember, it doesn’t matter how many proxies you chain together, you will never be 100% anonymous. Let’s look at an example…

[User]>>>>>[Proxy1]>>>>>[Proxy2]>>>>>[Proxy3]>>>>>[Proxy4]>>>>>[Destination]

The example shows that for a proxy chain to be created, the user must first connect to Proxy1. Once the user is connected to Proxy1, from Proxy1, the user will connect to Proxy2, from Proxy2, the user will connect to Proxy3, from Proxy3, the user will connect to Proxy4, from Proxy4, the user will then connect to the intended destination (web page, Unix server, ftp server, etc.). All together we have 4 proxies in this example. Each proxy is a link in the chain. If the user would be scanned while on the proxy chain in the example, the IP address or domain of Proxy4 would appear on the scan. Now the problem with proxies is they tend to “die out” in a few weeks or less. It all depends. So if Proxy2 were to cease functioning, the chain wouldn’t work. You would need to get rid of Proxy2 and just use Proxy1, Proxy3, and Proxy4 or find another proxy to take Proxy2’s place. This is why proxy chaining can be a real pain if you are using them just to surf the net. If one dies, you have to figure out which one is the one not working, so you have to go through each one to check them or until you find the one that isn’t working.

Proxy chaining is a necessity if you plan on using proxies to execute a “hack”. If you are attempting to gain unauthorized remote access to any server, whether it is through telnet, ftp, or http, chaining is a must. As I said, you will never be 100% anonymous no matter what you do online so it is possible that you still can be tracked even if u chain proxies. Chaining just makes it a lot hard to track someone. To make it even harder, its best to use foreign proxies because if someone wanted to trace you, they would need to get logs of your use of each proxy from each proxy administrator. This could take quite a while or even never at all if one of the proxy’s, or all for that matter, belong to an admin in a country that isn’t too fond of the country you are located in. The longer it takes for the authorities to subpoena the logs of your usage of a single proxy from that proxy’s administrator, the more chance that the other proxies that you used in the chain will have their logs deleted by the time anyone gets to the server administrators of those proxies. So when attempting to do any kind of “hack”, it’s best to use at least five or six proxies in a chain.

HTTP Chaining
HTTP chaining is basically chaining a proxy server in your browser’s address bar.

ex - http://proxy.magusnet.com/-_-http://www.google.com

Notice how the above proxy and destination (yahoo) are seperated by a (-_-) If you wanted to make a chain out of this you would simply add another proxy

ex. - http://proxy.server1.com/-_-http://proxy.server2.com/-_-http://www.destination.com)

Another way to use proxys in your address bar is by adding the proxy IP or domain then the port number.

ex. -  http://anon.free.anonymizer.com:80/http://www.google.com

Notice how the above proxy and destination server are seperated this time by a (/) forward slash instead of a (-_-) dash, underscore, dash. To make a chain out of this you would again simply add another proxy ex.

ex. - http://proxy1:80/http://proxy2:80/proxy3:80/http://www.yahoo.com)

Browser Chaining
To browser chain is fairly easy. I’ll use Internet Explorer as an example since I believe it is the browser that most people have and use. First you need to find the Internet Options. You can do this by either finding the Explorer icon on the desktop, right click on it, then press properties or if you have a browser window already opened if you are online then you can go to Tools (or sometimes its View) and press Internet Options. Now that you have the Internet Options window up you can now go to the Connections tab, then go to the first Settings button (not LAN Settings, the one above it) and click it. Now you should be in the Settings box. Put a check in the box where it says to Use a proxy server. Now if you wanted to surf using one proxy you would merely put the proxy in the Address: space and put the proxy’s port number in the Port: space. To use a chain here you would put in a proxy along with a “:” colon then the port number followed by a space separting the next proxy then a “:” colon then the port number then a space and so on. The last proxy you add should have its port number placed inside the Port: space. If you did it, then it should look like this exactly…

Address: 213.234.124.23:80 121.172.148.23:80 143.134.54.67 Port: 80

Notice that each proxy:port is separated by a space and that the last proxy has its port number placed in the Port: space. Do not check the box marked “Bypass proxy server for local addresses”. Press OK when you see that everything is in working order.

Wingate
A wingate is a proxy server that someone installs onto his/her computer which allows for a single or multiple online connection to take place through port 23, the default telnet port. Depending on their security, some wingates will allow anyone online to connect to them and usually stay “alive” or “working” anywhere from a few days to even months. There are people out there that scan for these Wingates and post the computer’s IP number or domain on their website to give anyone online a free list of them to use. You can also scan them yourself by using programs like WinScan.

Chaining Wingates Using Telnet
I’m going to assume you already know what telnet is so I will just get right down to it. To chain using telnet, you would first bring up the DOS prompt and type in “telnet” then your wingate. (Since telnet’s default port is 23 and all wingates run on port 23, the port number is not necessary but I will add it just to show you how you should type any port number out on screen) Example…

C:\WINDOWS>telnet 61.133.119.130 23

So now you have “telnet”, a space, the wingate IP, a space, then the port number 23. Once you are connected to the wingate it should look like this…

Wingate>

Now you would type your next wingate and port number in, then press enter like so…

Wingate> 203.207.173.166 23

You can continue to do this until you connected to as many Wingates as you need. Once you are finished with your wingates you would connect to your destination. Example…

WinGate>arbornet.org

So now the entire picture would look something like this…

C:\Windows> telnet 61.133.119.130 23

Wingate>203.207.173.166 23

Wingate>135.245.18.167 23

Wingate>m-net.arbornet.org
Connecting to host arbornet.org...Connected

  • Give it a value of 0

Decreasing Boot Time

Microsoft has made available a program to analyze and decrease the time it takes to boot to Windows XP.The program is called BootVis

  • Uncompress the file.
  • Run BOOTVIS.EXE
  • For a starting point, run Trace / Next Boot + Driver Delays
  • This will reboot your computer and provide a benchmark
  • After the reboot, BootVis will take a minute or two to show graphs of your system startup.
  • Note how much time it takes for your system to load (click on the red vertical line)
  • Then run Trace / Optimize System
  • Re-Run the Next Boot + Drive Delays

Note how much the time has decreased mine went from approximately 33 to 25 seconds.

To turn these off selectively:

  • Right click on the My Computer icon
  • Select Properties
  • Click on the Advanced tab
  • Under Performance, click on the Settings button
  • To turn them all of, select Adjust for best performance

My preference is to leave them all off except for Show shadows under mouse pointer and Show window contents while dragging

Increasing System Performance

If you have 512 megs or more of memory, you can increase system performance
by having the core system kept in memory.

  • Start Regedit
  • Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memorymanagement\DisablePagingExecutive
  • Set the value to be 1
  • Reboot the computer

Increasing File System Caching

To increase the amount of memory Windows will locked for I/O operations:

  • Start Regedit
  • Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
  • Edit the key IoPageLockLimit

Resolving Inability to Add or Remove Programs

If a particular user cannot add or remove programs, there might be a simple registry edit need.

  • Go to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Uninstall
  • Change the DWORD NoAddRemovePrograms to 0 disable it

4096 - 32megs of memory or less
8192 - 32+ megs of memory
16384 - 64+ megs of memory
32768 - 128+ megs of memory
65536 - 256+ megs of memory

I hope that was informative.

How to Convert Drive to NTFS

Posted by X.E.R.O

Your hard drive must be formatted with a file system such as FAT, FAT32 or NTFS so that Windows can be installed on toHow to Convert Drive to NTFS it. This system determines how files are named, organized and stored on the drive. If you’re not using it already, NTFS (New Technology File System) is recommended for Windows XP because of the additional functionality it offers. If your  PC came with Windows XP pre-installed then there’s a chance that you’re already using NTFS. If you’ve upgraded from Windows 98 or Windows Me you may still be using FAT or FAT 32. The option to change over to NTFS would have been available during the upgrade process. Don’t worry if you skipped this as it’s possible to convert at any time from within Windows XP without losing any data.

The recommended option
There are a number of features in Windows XP that will only work if the NTFS file system is present, which is why it’s suggested you make use of it. File and folder permissions, encryption and privacy options are just some of those you’ll be able to access. In particular, those of you who have set up user accounts will find NTFS invaluable. For instance, if you continue to use FAT or FAT32 anyone with physical access to the drive will be able to access the files and folders that are stored there. However, with NTFS you’ll be able to use a level of encryption (Professional Edition only) that will enable you to protect your data.

You’ll also find NTFS more reliable in that it’s more able to recover from disk errors than its FAT or FAT32 counterparts. A log of all disk activity is kept so should a crash occur, Windows XP can use this information to repair the file system when your PC boots up again. To find out what file system you’re using,

Open My Computer, right-click your main hard drive and choose Properties.

Take a look at the General tab to see confirmation of the file system that’s in use.

Convert now

  • You can use the convert tool in Windows XP to change the file system on your hard disk from FAT or FAT32 to NTFS. The whole process is safe and your existing data won’t be destroyed.
  • To begin, click Start -> Run, type cmd and press [Enter].
  • At the command prompt type

convert c: /fs:ntfs

and press [Return] (where ‘c’ is the letter of the drive you’re converting).

  • When you try and run the convert utility, it’s likely that Windows XP will be using your paging file so the process won’t be completed immediately. Therefore, you’ll see a brief message on screen informing you that the conversion will take place instead the next time Windows starts up. Having restarted, the Check Disk utility will run, the conversion will be performed automatically and you may find that your PC will reboot twice more.

The Benefits

With your drive now running NTFS, it’s time to take advantage of the new options that are available. Having created a number of different user accounts you can now control the level of access that’s granted to individual users. For example, there are going to be certain files and folders that you’ll want some users to be able to access but not others. If you have Windows XP Professional Edition you can do this immediately.

Right-click any file or folder, choose Properties and select the Security tab. A dialog will be displayed showing the names of all your users. Alongside will be two columns which enable you to select levels of access for each of them, the permissions include Full Control, Modify, Read and Write. You can then check the appropriate box to determine whether or not to Allow or Deny a particular permission. For Windows XP Home Edition users, the Security tab won’t be immediately available. To access this option you’ll need to restart your PC, pressing [F8] until a menu appears. Next select Safe Mode and wait for Windows XP to start up. You can then set your options in the same way.

Another feature is NTFS compression. It’s quick and seamless as your file or folder is decompressed automatically when you access it. (Don’t confuse this with a Zip compression utility where the files need to be extracted before they can be accessed.) Although you may have used NTFS compression on a file or folder, there’s no way of telling just by looking at it. To remedy this,

Open My Computer, click Tools -> Folder Options and select the View tab.

Under Advanced settings, scroll down and check the option ‘Show encrypted or compressed NTFS files in color’, then click Apply and OK.

Take a look at your compressed items in My Computer and you’ll see the text label has changed from black to blue. Something else that’s exclusive to Professional Edition users is the Encrypting File System (EFS). You can use this to protect your important data so that no one else can read it. Your encrypted files and folders will only be accessible when you have logged into your user account successfully.

Recover Corrupt System Files

Posted by X.E.R.O

Got your Windows whacked by a virus ? Especially antivirus like Norton and Avira are especially brutal towards the viruses and even nuke out the system files of windows.Bang comes the error dialog regarding a missing windows file or a dll.And as a last resort, common users tend to format their windows installation . However,If an essential Windows file gets deleted by a virus or otherwise corrupted, you can restore it from the Windows CD.

Here is how to do it - Recover Corrupt System Files - More windows tips at PROHACK

  • Search the Windows CD for the filename, replacing the last character with an underscore

for example: Notepad.ex_

  • If it's found, open a command prompt and enter the command EXPAND, followed by the full pathname of the file and of the desired destination

for example: EXPAND D:\SETUP\NOTEPAD.EX_ C:\Windows\NOTEPAD.EXE

If either pathname contains any spaces, surround it with double quotes.

  • If the file isn't found, search on the unmodified filename. It will probably be inside a CAB file, which Win XP treats as a folder.
  • Simply right-drag and copy the file to the desired location. In other Windows platforms, search for a file matching *.cab that contains the filename.
  • When the search is done, open a command prompt and enter EXTRACT /L followed by the desired location, the full pathname of the CAB file, and the desired filename

for example: EXTRACT /L C:\Windows D:\I386\Driver.cab Notepad.exe

Again, if the destination or CAB file pathname contains spaces, surround it with double quotes.

  • Replace the file or exe with the one found in Windows CD. And restart to see the changes. Voila..you are done…

Keep learning and stay tuned for more.

Debug Dos Command Tutorial

Posted by X.E.R.O

Debug is a program that comes with modern versions of DOS (I do not know when It started shipping out with DOS). Anyway, all Windows users should have it already. It's a great tool for debugging programs, de-assembling and cracking, and reading "hidden" memory areas like the boot sector, and much more. The following was copied from an assembly tutorial who's author we cannot credit, because we have no idea who he is.
Get into DOS and type "debug", you will get a prompt like this:
-
Now type "?", you should get the following response:
assemble A [address]
compare C range addressDebug Dos Command Tutorial - More programming tutorials at Programming section
dump D [range]
enter E address [list]
fill F range list
go G [=address] [addresses]
hex H value1 value2
input I port
load L [address] [drive] [firstsector] [number]
move M range address
name N [pathname] [arglist]
output O port byte
proceed P [=address] [number]
quit Q
register R [register]
search S range list
trace T [=address] [value]
unassemble U [range]
write W [address] [drive] [firstsector] [number]
allocate expanded memory XA [#pages]
deallocate expanded memory XD [handle]
map expanded memory pages XM [Lpage] [Ppage] [handle]
display expanded memory status XS
Lets go through each of these commands:
Assemble:
-a
107A:0100
At this point you can start assembling some programs, just like using a assembler. However the debug assembler is very limited as you will probably notice. Lets try to enter a simple program:
-a
107A:0100 MOV AH,02
107A:0102 MOV DL,41
107A:0104 INT 21
107A:0106 INT 20
-g
A

Program terminated normally
That's the same program we did at the end of the previous chapter. Notice how you run the program you just entered with "g", and also notice how the set-up part is not there? That's because debug is just too limited to support that.
Another thing you can do with assemble is specify the address at which you want to start, by default this is 0100 since that's where all .COM files start.
Compare: Compare takes 2 block of memory and displays them side by side, byte for byte. Lets do an example. Quite out of debug if you haven't already using "q". Now type "debug c:\command.com"
-c 0100 l 8 0200
10A3:0100 7A 06 10A3:0200
This command compared offset 0100 with 0200 for a length of 8 bytes. Debug responded with the location that was DIFFERENT. If 2 locations were the same, debug would just omit them, if all are the same debug would simply return to the prompt without any response.
Dump: Dump will dump a specified memory segment. To test it, code that assembly program again:
C:\>debug
-a
107A:0100 MOV AH,02
107A:0102 MOV DL,41
107A:0104 INT 21
107A:0106 INT 20
-d 0100 l 8
107A:0100 B4 02 B2 41 CD 21 CD 20
...A.!.
The "B4 02 B2 41 CD 21 CD 20" is the program you just made in machine language.
B4 02 = MOV AH,02
B2 41 = MOV DL,41
CD 21 = INT 21
CD 20 = INT 20
The "...A.!." part is your program in ASCII. The "." represent non-printable characters. Notice the A in there.
Enter:
This is one of the hard commands. With it you can enter/change certain memory areas. Lets change our program so that it prints a B instead of an A.
-e 0103 <-- edit program at segment 0103
107A:0103 41.42 <-- change 41 to 42
-g
B

Program terminated normally
Wasn't that amazing?

Fill: This command is fairly useless, but who knows....It fills the specified amount of memory with the specified data. Lets for example clear out all memory from segment 0100 to 0108, which happens to be our program.
-f 0100 l 8 0 <-- file offset 0100 for a length of 8 bytes with 0
-d 0100 l 8 <-- verify that it worked
107A:0100 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 .......
Yep, it worked.
Go: So far we used go (g) to start the program we just created. But Go can be used for much more. For example, lets say we want to execute a program at 107B:0100:
-r CS <-- set the CS register to point to 107B
CS 107A
:107B
-g =100
You can also set breakpoints.
-a <-- enter our original program so we have something
107A:0100 MOV AH,02 to work with
107A:0102 MOV DL,41
107A:0104 INT 21
107A:0106 INT 20
-g 102 <-- set up a break point at 107A:0102
At this point the program will stop, display all registers and the current instruction.
Hex: This can be very useful. It subtracts and adds two hexadecimal values:
-h 2 1
0003 0001 <-- 2h + 1+ = 3h and 2h - 1h = 1h
This is very useful for calculating a programs length, as you will see later.
Input: This is one of the more advanced commands, and I decided not to talk about it too much for now. It will read a byte of data from any of your computers I/O ports (keyboard, mouse, printer, etc).
-i 3FD
60
Your data may be different. In case you want to know, 3FD is Com port 1, also known as First Asynchronous Adapter.

Load: This command has 2 formats. It can be used to load the filename specified with the name command (n), or it can load a specific sector.
-n c:\command.com
-l
This will load command.com into debug. When a valid program is loaded all registers will be set up and ready to execute the program. The other method is a bit more complicated, but potential also more usefull. The syntax is
L <address> <drive letter/> <sector> <amount to load>
-l 100 2 10 20
This will load starting at offset 0100 from drive C (0 = A, 1 = B, 2 = C, etc), sector 10h for 20h sectors. This can be useful for recovering files you deleted.
Move: Move takes a byte from the starting address and moves it to the destination address. This is very good to temporary move data into a free area, than manipulate it without having to worry about affecting the original program. It is especially useful if used in conjunction with the r command to which I will get later. Lets try an example:
-a <-- enter our original program so we have something
107A:0100 MOV AH,02 to work with
107A:0102 MOV DL,41
107A:0104 INT 21
107A:0106 INT 20
-m 107A:0100 L 8 107B:0100 <-- more 8 bytes starting from 107A:0100 into 107B:0100
-e 107B:0103 <-- edit 107B:0103
107B:0103 41.42 <-- and change it 42 (
-d 107A:0100 L 8 <-- make sure it worked
107A:0100 B4 02 B2 41 CD 21 CD 20 ...A.!.
-d 107B:0100 L 8
107A:0100 B4 02 B2 42 CD 21 CD 20 ...B.!.
-m 107B:0100 L 8 107A:0100 <-- restore the original program since we like the changes.
Name: This will set debug up with a filename to use for I/O commands. You have to include the file extension, and you may use addition commands:
-n c:\command.com
Output:
Exactly what you think it is. Output sends stuff to an I/O port. If you have an external modem with those cool lights on it, you can test this out. Find out what port your modem is on and use the corresponding hex number below:
Com 1 = 3F8 - 3FF (3DF for mine)
Com 2 = 2F8 - 2FF
Com 3 = ??? - ??? (if someone knows, please let me know)
Now turn on the DTA (Data Terminal Ready) bit by sending 01h to it:
-o XXX 1 <-- XXX is the com port in hex
As soon as you hit enter, take a look at your modem, you should see a light light up. You can have even more fun with the output command. Say someone put one of those BIOS passwords on "your" computer. Usually you'd have to take out the battery to get rid of it, but not anymore:
MI/AWARD BIOS
-o 70 17
-o 71 17

QPHOENIX BIOS
-o 70 FF
-o 71 17

QGENERIC
-o 70 2E
-o 71 FF
These commands will clear the BIOS memory, thus disabling the password.
Proceed: Proceeds in the execution of a program, usually used together withy Trace, which I will cover later. Like the go command, you can specify an address from which to start
using =address
-p 2
Debug will respond with the registers and the current command to be executed.
Quite: This has got to be the most advanced feature of debug, it exits debug!
-q
Register: This command can be used to display the current value of all registers, or to manually set them. This is very useful for writing files as you will see later on.
-r AX
AX: 011B
:5
-
Search: Another very useful command. It is used to find the occurrence of a specific byte, or series of bytes in a segment. The data to search for can by either characters, or a hex value. Hex values are entered with a space or comma in between them, and characters are enclosed with quotes (single or double). You can also search for hex and characters with the same string:
-n c:\command.com <-- load command.com so we have some data to search in
-l
-s 0 l 0 "MS-DOS" <-- search entire memory block for "MS-DOS"
10A3:39E9 <-- found the string in 10A3:39E9
NOTE: the search is case sensitive!
Trace: This is a truly great feature of debug. It will trace through a program one instruction at a time, displaying the instruction and registers after each. Like the go command you can specify where to start executing from, and for how long.
-a <-- yes, this thing again
107A:0100 MOV AH,02
107A:0102 MOV DL,41
107A:0104 INT 21
107A:0106 INT 20
-t =0100 8
If you leave out the amount of instructions that you want to trace, you can use the proceed (p) to continue the execution as long as you want.
Unassemble: Un-assembles a block of code. Great for debugging (and cracking)
-u 100 L 8 <-- unassembles 8 bytes starting at offset 100
107A:0100 MOV AH,02 <-- debut's response
107A:0102 MOV DL,41
107A:0104 INT 21
107A:0106 INT 20
Write: This command works very similar to Load. It also has 2 ways it can operate: using name, and by specifying an exact location. Refer to back to Load for more information.
NOTE: The register CX must be set the file size in order to write!
NOTE: Write will not write .EXE or .HEX files.[SIZE=7][SIZE=14]

Keep programming.

How to Bear a Job That You Hate

Posted by X.E.R.O

How to Bear a Job That You HateHate to get up in the morning because you know where you have to go ? There aren't many people out there who are  working in their dream careers. Most hate what they do for a living and can barely tolerate the people around them. Here's what you do when you can't just quit.

Here is what to do

  • Look for another job - Even if you are obligated to your current job for a period of time, it is empowering to know what other opportunities are available to you. Make plans for the future. Look forward to the day when you are able to free yourself from the abysmal existence that is your current situation.
  • Remember that your current job isn't permanent - The average person goes through 5 careers in their lifetime. Some of those jobs only last 3 years. Give it time.
  • Do a bang up job - Be the all time best employee that your backward company has ever seen. Don't let the company's failures be your own. Make a great mark. Accomplishments always look good on a resume.
  • Keep your Sense of Humor - Having time to laugh can make even the most unbearable jobs tolerable. Bring a Joke book to work or find humorous points of view when you're doing your job. Plus, Studies have shown that laughing is good for your health. Being Optimistic can keep the ball rolling in your favor.
  • Occupy your free time with rewarding activities - Where your work fails you, fill in the blanks. Set a goal to build strength and stamina and start a rigorous workout routine, volunteer at a children's hospital, or learn to play anHow to Bear a Job That You Hate instrument. If you are distracted in your free time you won't be thinking about how much your job sucks. If you work for 8 hours a day; that means you have 8 hours to sleep and 8 hours to yourself. Keep it that way.
  • Share bad work experiences with family and friends - Some events that seem agitating and stressful at the time may actually turn out to be amusing once relayed to a trusted friend. It can be cathartic to tell someone what makes your job so bad. Jobvent.com lets you rant, rave and holler about your negative experience at work. It's important to remember that someone will always have it worse than you so be thankful for what you have when you read some of the other horror stories.
  • Try to make a friend at work - Even if you think you have nothing in common with the people around you. An awful job is much better when you can have a laugh with someone.

Keep in mind that

  • Experience matters - Use all the bad experiences (and the good ones, if there were any) to select an optimal working situation in your next job. Carefully interview prospective employers to assure that you don't lock yourself into another horrible job.How to Bear a Job That You Hate
  • Negotiate more than adequate compensation - Even bad jobs are tolerable when you're paid!
  • Be Considerate - Be more considerate to the people who irritate you most and see if you can make friends with them. Once you've gone that extra mile and made the effort to befriend the source of your irritation, you'll probably see the situation improve, if it doesn't, you probably really DO need a new job!
  • Seek professional help - More than 19 million Americans suffer from depression. A lot of it is work-related. Some companies offer Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) , which have counselors available to help you through tough times. If your work doesn't offer EAP, see if your health insurance does and get some help.
  • I QUIT !!!! - You also have the option of quitting the job if you truly resent it.

A Word of caution

  • It is easy to be distracted in a job that you don't like.Don't fall into this trap. Be sure to complete all your tasks. Anything that leaves your desk should be held to impeccable standards.
  • Don't let anyone at your job know that you hate it. Smile and be cordial.

and in the end,be happy and try to be content.

Posted by X.E.R.O

Nokia N97 - More cellphone news at Cellphone sectionAfter a long wait,Nokia has finally announced the N97, the company's white knight to challenge the iPhone and revive to the N-series to their former glory. The N97 packs a 3.5" touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera and 32GB of memory, and is on of the most highly anticipated gadgets.

The N97 features a kick-out QWERTY keyboard cleverly hidden behind the phone's 3.5" - 16:9 aspect ratio - touchscreen. The N97 rocks a 5-megapixel camera on the back with Carl Zeiss Tessar lens and dual LED flash. Also, unlike the iPhone or the T-Mobile G1, the N97 can capture video in DVD quality in 16:9 aspect ratio.

Nokia N97 - More cellphone news at Cellphone sectionThe N97 is loaded with 32GB of on-board memory - twice the amount of memory the most expensive iPhone brings. Also, the capacity can be extended with microSD cards of up to 16GB, packing up to a potential of 48GB storage on the N97.

The N97 is a 3G phone that can also do HSDPA speeds at blazing 7.2Mb/s (obviously, if your carrier can handle it) and Wi-Fi. The usual flavor of A-GPS with an electronic compass is present, and if you plan to keep yourself entertained with this phone, Nokia says that the N97 can deliver up to 37 hours of music and 4.5 hours of video playback. This makes up for excellent battery backup too. The N97 runs on Symbian S50 5th Edition and is priced at around $700.

Nokia has added the ability of having home screen widgets on the N97 which will enable you to update social networks automatically with your status and location as well as related pictures or video.

We will be waiting for this behemoth to launch and take over us.

Convert To Basic And Dynamic Disks In Windows XP

Posted by X.E.R.O

Windows XP Professional supports two types of disk storage: basic and dynamic. Convert To Basic And Dynamic Disks In Windows XPBasic disk storage uses partition-oriented disks. A basic disk contains basic volumes (primary partitions, extended partitions, and logical drives).Dynamic disk storage uses volume-oriented disks, and includes features that basic disks do not, such as the ability to create volumes that span multiple disks (spanned and striped volumes).

General Notes
Before you change a basic disk to a dynamic disk, note these items:

  • You must have at least 1 megabyte (MB) of free space on any master boot record (MBR) disk that you want to convert. This space is automatically reserved when the partition or volume is created in Microsoft Windows 2000 or Windows XP Professional. However, it may not be available on partitions or volumes that are created in other operating systems.
  • When you convert to a dynamic disk, the existing partitions or logical drives on the basic disk are converted to simple volumes on the dynamic disk.
  • After you convert to a dynamic disk, the dynamic volumes cannot be changed back to partitions. You must first delete all dynamic volumes on the disk, and then convert the dynamic disk back to a basic disk. If you want to keep your data, you must first back up or move the data to another volume.
  • After you convert to a dynamic disk, local access to the dynamic disk is limited to Windows XP Professional and Windows 2000.
  • If your disk contains multiple installations of Windows XP Professional or Windows 2000, do not convert to a dynamic disk. The conversion operation removes partition entries for all partitions on the disk with the exception of the system and boot volumes for the current operating system.
  • Dynamic disks are not supported on portable computers or Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition.
  • Before you change a dynamic disk back to a basic disk, note that all existing volumes must be deleted from the disk before you can convert it back to a basic disk. If you want to keep your data, back up the data, or move your data to another volume.

How to Convert a Basic Disk to a Dynamic Disk

To convert a basic disk to a dynamic disk:

  • Log on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
  • Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  • Click Performance and Maintenance, click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.
  • In the left pane, click Disk Management.
  • In the lower-right pane, right-click the basic disk that you want to convert, and then click Convert to Dynamic Disk.

NOTE:You must right-click the gray area that contains the disk title on the left side of the Details pane. For example, right-click Disk 0.

  • Select the check box that is next to the disk that you want to convert (if it is not already selected), and then click OK.
  • Click Details if you want to view the list of volumes in the disk.
  • Click Convert.
  • Click Yes when you are prompted to convert, and then click OK.

How to Convert a Dynamic Disk to a Basic Disk

To change a dynamic disk back to a basic disk:

  • Back up all the data on all the volumes on the disk you want to convert to a basic disk.
  • Log on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
  • Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  • Click Performance and Maintenance, click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.
  • In the left pane, click Disk Management.
  • Right-click a volume on the dynamic disk that you want to change to a basic disk, and then click Delete Volume.
  • Click Yes when you are prompted to delete the volume.
  • Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each volume on the dynamic disk.
  • After you have deleted all the volumes on the dynamic disk, right-click the dynamic disk that you want to change to a basic disk, and then click Convert to Basic Disk.

NOTE:You must right-click the gray area that contains the disk title on the left side of the Details pane. For example, right-click Disk 1.

Download NERO from ProhackStart NERO, choose FILE, choose BURN IMAGE, locate the .cue file you have and double click it. A dialog box will come up, for anything other than music make sure you choose DISC-AT-ONCE (DAO). You can also turn off the simulation burn if you so choose. Then burn away.
To burn with CDRWin - Download CDRWIN
Start CDRWin, choose the button on the top left, choose LOAD CUESHEET, press START RECORDING.

To burn with Fireburner -
Start Fireburner, click on the button on the bottom left corner "VISUAL CUE BURNER/BINCHUNKER", press the right mouse button and choose LOAD TRACKS FROM .CUE and choose the correct .CUE file, press the right mouse button again and choose select "Burn/Test Burn", choose DISK AT ONCE (DAO), disable TEST BURN and MULTISESSION, press OK.
To Burn with Alcohol 120% -
Download Alcohol 120%Start Alcohol, click on left hand side “Image burning Wizard”. Then Choose the image file in the incoming dialog box,Then click on Next and choose the DVD/CD recorder and set the writing speed and choose DISK AT ONCE (DAO),select “Enable Bufer underrun technology” and click on START.

.CUE ERRORS
The most common error you will get with a .cue file is when it points to an incorrect path. This is easily fixed. Find the .bin file, copy the exact title including the .bin extension. Now find the .cue file, open the .cue file using notepad. It should look similar to this:
FILE "name of file.bin" BINARY
TRACK 01 MODE2/2352
INDEX 01 00:00:00
TRACK 02 MODE2/2352
INDEX 00 00:04:00
INDEX 01 00:06:00
Delete everything in the quotes, in this case we would delete name of file.bin. Now place the title you copied in between the quotes. Save the changes and close out. Thats it, your .cue file should work now.
OTHER WAYS TO USE .BIN & .CUE FILES
VCDGear:
This program will allow you to extract MPEG streams from CD images, convert VCD files to MPEG, correct MPEG errors, and more.
Daemon Tools:
Download Daemon Tools This program creates a virtual drive on your PC which will allow you to "mount" the .cue file and use whatever is in the .bin file without having to burn it to a cd.
ISOBuster:
Download ISOBUSTER This program will allow you to "bust" open the .bin file and extract the files within the .bin.

Improve Google Page Rank and Alexa Ranking

Posted by X.E.R.O

Showing up on search engines is one of the most critical ways to increase website traffic and expose your content, improve search engine rankings product or service to people who might be interested in what you have to offer. Most of the major search engines utilize an algorithm to determine where a website ranks.Google uses Pagerank system and Alexa uses various criteria’s to rank your position in related searches.A proven but little-known way to improve your page rank with Google and your Alexa ranking for new web authors is here for you.

Steps

  1. Build a website. NVU is an easy free WYSIWYG html editor or use a simple blogging platform like blogger, typepad or wordpress.
  2. Make sure that your site is optimized for the search engines and that all meta tags and robot tags are constructed properly.
  3. Focus building your site on original and unique content. Once Internet users start to appreciate and see the value in your website, they will begin linking to it.
  4. Submit your site map to Google to have all of your pages indexed.
  5. Submit to the main search engines, Yahoo, Google, MSN and any others that you prefer.
  6. Go to your favorite search engines and type in "social bookmark sites".
  7. Submit your site and any other favorite sites to as many social bookmark sites that you like.
  8. Submit your site to as many directories as you can, specially to those with high page rank like DMOZ or yahoo directory or to any smaller directory with lower page rank.
  9. Update your site frequently adding new content that keeps users returning to your site.

This method is two-pronged because not only will you get better positions in searches for your keywords, you are also going to receive one way inbound links for your website which will improve your search engine rankings.Add your website address sparingly to social bookmarking and wiki sites. Users who over-indulge in self-promotion will be perceived as spammers which may result in your website being added to blacklists or, even worse, your efforts to be simply ignored.Beware of duplicate content. Always make sure to check the content that you get by searching for the content on Google, Yahoo, and MSN.Be original and blog original. And just in case if you are copying from other blogs or websites, then do give a reference or link to the original source.

Good luck and cheers

All about Blue Ray Disc – Phoenix of future

Posted by X.E.R.O

Blu-ray Disc players and PC drives, as well as Sony's PlayStation 3, use a blue laser beam to read data from More consumer news and reviews at prohackdiscs, rather than the older red lasers used for DVDs. A blue laser can be focused more tightly, so disc makers can pack more data on a disc the same size as a DVD. Blu-ray Discs can hold up to 50 gigabytes, compared to a DVD, which holds less than 10 GB. That added capacity can hold video up to six times the resolution of DVD, plus more bonus features and improved surround soundtracks.

Most people can easily see Blu-ray's improvement in picture quality. The video resolution, called "1080p" because it constantly (or progressively, hence the p) redraws 1,080 lines across the screen (each line containing 1,920 pixels), surpasses the best HDTV broadcast or cable signals.Other than a BD player, you'll probably want an HDTV, to get the full quality and widescreen effect. (When watched on a older, standard-shaped tube set, the image is severely letterboxed with dark bands above and below.) Before buying a Blu-ray player to connect to an older TV, check the player's back panel: Not all have the kinds of outputs needed to connect to older sets. Most players send audio and video to newer TVs and displays via a single cable called HDMI. And don't get caught up in the various flavors of HDTV — 720p, 1080i and 1080p — because Blu-ray players can send an HD signal to any of them.

All Blu-ray players will play standard DVDs — and most "up-convert" those DVDs so they look closer to HD quality. Most players handle music CDs as well. If you are particularly interested in checking out picture-in-picture commentary tracks and online bonus features on discs, look for players that include Profile 1.1 (picture-in-picture capability) and BD-Live or Profile 2.0 (online connections) among the specifications.

Initially, the only player that was fully equipped was Sony's PS3 game system, but many current Blu-ray players in the $250 range have both sets of features. Two recent entries, the LG BD300 ($350) and the Samsung BD-P2550 ($370) also let Netflix subscribers stream movies. Earlier this year, players sold for at least $400, but special holiday deals have resulted in entry-level models. As newer, more expensive models continue to hit stores, older ones will be reduced in price.Consumers have become increasingly price-sensitive, thanks to DVD.

Blu-ray players will play DVDs and most will boost the video resolution (or "up-rez" them), so "there is no reason for the consumer to think that all of their video library is going to be antiquated.Studios will try to entice movie lovers to repurchase films they may have already on DVD (and perhaps videocassette) by remastering the video and adding new extra features.

Some discs have interactive games, such as the Casino Royale Collector's Edition's multiplayer Bond trivia game. A few of the newest releases take advantage of bonus features delivered via the Internet: Last month, Del Toro (Director of HellBoy 2:The Golden Army) conducted an online chat with owners of the Hellboy II  Blu-ray Disc.

Blu-ray will sound as good as DVDs do on your system. Many HDTVs and displays have built-in speakers, but surround-sound fanatics will want to make sure their receiver has digital audio inputs. And movie fans who want to get the most out of Blu-ray's improved soundtracks will want to look for higher-priced players that either decode or pass along ultra-high-resolution sound formats Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Discs such as Dark Knight (out Tuesday) can hold one or more soundtracks with up to seven speaker channels (plus a subwoofer) for those fortunate enough to have top sound equipment.

So far, about 1,000 Blu-ray Discs have been released, compared with more than 93,700 DVDs, according to The DVD Release Report. Current movie downloads can take two hours or more to arrive, and even those labeled high definition do not match the quality of Blu-ray.So far,Blue ray is the way to go...

Difference between DVD formats

Posted by X.E.R.O

There's DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW, and even DVD-ROM! So what's the difference between all of these More consumer reviews at Prohackdifferent names, aren't all DVDs the same? Well, it's not quite that simple.

Let's first start with the most obvious difference: some have R and some have RW. The "R" stands for readable, while the "W" stands for writeable.

The main difference between DVD-R and DVD-RW, or DVD+R and DVD+RW is that the R disc formats can only be written to once, and then it is only readable and can’t be erased for the rest of its digital life. While RW discs are can be written to and erased many times, they are both readable and writeable.

"R" discs are perfect if they are only needed to be written to once, such as giving some files to a friend or transferring them between PCs. "RW" discs have their strength in the ability to be used many times over, which is great for routine system backups, etc. And naturally, the RW discs are slightly more expensive than the R discs, but you'll have to decide if the trade offs are worth the money.

Now, onto the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R. As I just described above, DVD-R & DVD-RW are sister discs, the difference being one is writeable once, while the other is writeable multiple times. The same thing is true for DVD+R & DVD+RW. So the question is, what's the difference between the plus and minus?

In order to explain this we must take a trip back in time. When DVDs were first being developed, there was no industry standard. Multiple companies were competing to develop what they hoped would be the dominant form of the future.

The DVD-R DVD+R difference can easily be summarized by the following:

  • The DVD-R/RW standard was developed by Pioneer, and is used primarily by Apple and Pioneer. These "minus" discs can only be written to in one layer on the discs surface. In addition, this format is supported by the DVD forum, but is in no way an industry standard. DVD-R/RW discs are cheaper than the "plus" format.
  • The DVD+R/RW format is supported by Philips, Dell, Sony, HP, and Mcft. These discs can be written to in multiple layers, giving them slightly better and more disc storage than the "minus" format. Because of this additional capacity, they are slightly more expensive than "minus" discs.

A couple final things to clear up is the difference between DVD-ROM and DVD+RW, or the other DVD formats I mentioned above. The DVD-ROM drive can only read DVDs, while the other DVD drives can read and write data to DVDs.

And naturally the DVD+RW CD+RW difference can be explained by the "DVD" or "CD" prefix. DVDs, on average, can store up to 4.7 GB of data, while a CD can only store about 700 MB of data, or about 15% of a DVD's capacity. While CDs are slightly cheaper, in my opinion, the benefits of DVDs are much greater.

So now that you've learned about the difference between DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, and even DVD-ROM, which one is right for you? The easiest way to determine which is more beneficial is to watch the industry trends. A few years ago all pre-built computers were shipping with DVD-ROM drives. Today, most PCs have a burnable DVD drive.

I feel that the benefits of having a burnable DVD drive far outweigh any additional costs. They store much more data, and they are ideal for storing your home movies to watch on your DVD player.

My advice is to look at DVD burners that support all of the major formats I've mentioned above, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, and DVD+RW. While a DVD drive that supports all of these formats may be slightly more expensive, it will allow you to use any type of DVD disc to burn to, and you'll be protected from any industry shifts to one format or the other.

A to Z of Warez Definitions

Posted by X.E.R.O

New to the scene of warez ? here is a comprehensive warez “lingo” dictionary that will help you mingle into the shady areas of internet :) . Lets have a look at the A to Z of Warez

  • 0-Day - Latest software releases. Download More Softwares at downloads section
  • 0-Sec - Same as above, although the period of time between ripping a game or application and it appearing on a warez site is even shorter.
  • Ace File - The first file in a series of compressed archives (the one you double click on to decompress all the files at once).
  • Active List - Similar to a mailing list, but uses ICQ to send instant messages to subscribers.
  • Alpha - Software receives this label when it is in the very early stages of development. Usually full of bugs, so don't touch it with a barge pole.
  • Anti-Leech - A system which uses cgi scripts to prevent people stealing links and then taking the credit for uploading the files.
  • Appz - Short for applications. For example Flash 5 or GoLie 5.5.
  • ASF File - The worst quality movie file format (still pretty good though), much smaller in size than dat or mpg.
  • Banner Site - Password and username restricted FTP site. To get the correct login details you must click on several banners.
  • Beta - Refers to an almost finished piece of software that is released to the public for bug testing.
  • BSA - An acronym for Business Software Alliance, an organisation who are responsible for enforcing anti-piracy litigation. Similar groups in charge of controlling software "theft" include the SIIA, SPA and ELSPA.
  • BSOD - Many people read about BSODs on bulletin boards and think that they're being insulted, but there is no need to get paranoid. It is actually an acronym for "Blue Screen Of Death". These can occur for a multitude of reasons (old Bill likes to keep us guessing!) and are the bane of PC user's lives.
  • Bulletin Board - A virtual meeting place on the web similar to a chat room except that it isn't in real time. One person leaves a message then others come along, read it and add a reply. Each new discussion is called a new topic or thread and has it's own link. Whenever a new topic is created the older topics are pushed one place downwards in the list. When someone replies to an older topic it is brought back to the top of the list.
  • C?? File - File extension that indicates that a file is part of an .ace or .rar series of compressed files.
  • Cgi Scripts - These are referrers which are used in url’s. When you click on a link with a ?cgi reference you are directed to a sponsor’s website or an anti-leech protected file.
  • Cookie - A tiny text file (usually less than 1kb), which is stored on your hard drive when you visit a web site. These are used to remember who you are so that you can access members only areas on the site without having to type in a password every time or to retain your personalized settings so that they are available the next time you visit.
  • Courier - Someone who is involved in the logistics of delivering new releases directly from the release groups themselves to FTP sites.
  • Crack - A tiny executable file that is used to transform a shareware program into the full version. Also used to remove any copy protection from the main executable of games (this will already have been done in "ripped" warez games).
  • CRC Error - These can occur when you try to decompress a file that has become corrupt during the downloading process, usually as a result of too much resuming.
  • Credits - The amount of data you are permitted to download from a ratio site. The more credits you have the more software you are allowed to download.
  • DAP - A quick way of referring to "Download Accelerator Plus", a free download manager that claims to speed up file transfers by up to three hundred per cent. It works by making multiple connections to the same file and is paid for by revolving advertising banners. Also supports resume.
  • DAT File - File format used for movies, identical in quality and size to mpg as far as I can tell.
  • DC - The lazy way of referring to the Dreamcast, Sega's latest console incarnation.
  • Decompression - Unpacking many files that have been stored in a single archive.
  • Distro - A concise means of referring to a distribution FTP site. These are huge storage areas which act as a springboard for the transfer of new releases. Their whereabouts are never public disclosed to aid their survival rate. You can think of them as the initial source from which warez emanates.
  • Direct Downloads - Links to actual files rather than other warez sites or pages. These are usually gathered together from many different sites and put on one page for your convenience.
  • DivX - Movies ripped from a DVD using the DivX video codecs. Can be played back using Media Player.
  • DIZ File - Short for description. Very brief text file found in warez archives stating the title of the software, the number of files that makes up the set and the group who released it.
  • Download (or DL) - Copying files from a web server or FTP site to your computer using a modem.
  • Emulator - An application that simulates another computer system or console using your PC.
  • FAQ - Stands for Frequently Asked Questions.
  • FAW - Abbreviation for "Files Anywhere", a popular, free web storage service.
  • File Transfer Protocol (FTP) - The method used to transfer files from one computer to another using a modem.
  • Filler - Refers to a person who uploads stuff to pub for others to download.
  • Flaming - A general net term for "verbally" attacking someone. This can be done via email, bulletin board, chat room or any medium which involves communication across the web.
  • Freedrive - Virtual hard drive storage area on the web. Free to join and anything and everything can be uploaded or downloaded.
  • Freeware - Unrestricted software that is downloaded from the net and is completely free to use. Often paid for using advertising.
  • FTP Client / Browser - A program used to access, upload and download data from FTP sites.
  • FXP - File eXchange Protocol - This refers to server to server transfer. You can transfer files from one pub to another using very little of your own bandwidth. This is by far the best means for distributing large files, only problem is that a very limited number of FXP capable pubs exist.
  • Gamez - Pretty self-explanatory this one.
  • Getright - One of the best download managers available.
  • Gold - A piece of software is said to have gone gold when the final version is complete and it is ready to ship to the public.
  • Gozilla - Another excellent download manager.
  • Hacking - Gaining access to a remote computer without the authorisation to do so. Usually for the purposes of stealing confidential information or the malicious destruction of data.
  • Hammering - Repeatedly trying to access an FTP site using an FTP client or download manager.
  • HTTP - Stands for "Hypertext Transfer Protocol". The method you use to view a web page. Always comes before the address of a website in your Url bar.
  • ICQ - Derives from the term "I Seek You" and is used for real time chat and transferring files over the internet.
  • IP - 32 bit binary number identifying the position of a computer on the Internet - similar to the URL. The URL is usually easier to remember as it is alpha based rather than numerical.
  • IP Range - usually referred to when talking about scanning a particular range of ip addresses. They can be broken down into A, B, and C ranges - AAA.BBB.CCC.xxx. Usually an entire B range will be scanned at a time.
  • IRC - Stands for "Instant Relay Chat". Used for real time chat and transferring files over the Internet.
  • ISO - An exact copy of an original CD, all the multimedia bits and pieces are uncut and therefore they are extremely large and awkward to download.
  • Java - Html scripts used to add functionality to or bring web pages alive. These include animation (such as the title graphic on my main page), menus, chat rooms, buttons, pop ups and so on.
  • KBps - Kilobytes per second - This is what most transfer speed are referring to. One Byte is comprised of 8 Bits.
  • Kbps - Kilobits per second - This is what most modem speeds are referring to. Why? Probably to make them look faster. Divide by 8 to get KBps.
  • Key Generator - A tiny executable program that is capable of creating a serial number from a specified username. These are specific to particular applications or utilities, so a serial number created with one key generator will only work for the program for which the key generator was developed.
  • Lamer - An annoying and overused general derogatory term used to insult/put down anyone and everything.
  • Leeching - Downloading files without giving anything back in return or copying other people’s links.
  • Mirror - An exact copy of a web site that is stored on a different server. Using multiple locations for warez sites allows the site to be accessed using a different address if the main site is deleted.
  • Modchip - Very common website sponsor found on warez sites. They don’t mind their banners being used on illegal software sites because their products are one of the “grey areas” of the law. Modchips are small pieces of electronic circuitry which allow copied games to be played on your Playstation. If a Playstation has been fitted with a Modchip it is said to have been "chipped".
  • MP3 File - Compressed music file format. Average track size is between 3 and 4 meg compared to 40-ish meg in wav format.
  • MPG File - The best quality and largest movie file format.
  • Multi Web Space Faker - A tool used to create lots of free web space accounts simultaneously.
  • Name Zero - An organisation that offers free website domain names. The main drawbacks are that you have to put up with a very bulky banner residing at the bottom of your page and the fact that you never actually own your chosen address.
  • NFO File - Short for info or information. Basic text file containing all the important details relating to a particular release, such as number of files, release date, copy protection system, installation instructions etc.
  • Nuked - A release is said to be nuked if it is completely unplayable. Usually when this happens another group re-releases the particular game, although fixes do sometimes follow on to rescue the game from trash can.
  • OEM - An acronym for Original Equipment Manufacturer. OEM software products are repackaged versions of the full retail product. They are often re-branded to suit the needs of the particular vender and are much more reasonable priced because they lack excessive packaging and a hard copy of the manual.
  • OST - Not strictly a warez term this one, but one that you are likely to come across while searching for MP3 music. It stands for original soundtrack (movie music).
  • Patch - We all know games and applications aren't perfect. When they are released we would hope that they have been thoroughly tested for bugs and incompatibility problems, but you can guarantee that many of these will still slip through the quality control net. Once the program is released to the general public, the bug reports start to flood in. A patch is a downloadable executive file which takes these reports into account and attempts to incorporate all the fixes for these known problems. A patch can resolve incompatibility problems, prevent crashes or improve the performance of a piece of software.
  • Piracy - The replication and distribution of videos or computer software.
  • Pop-ups - Irritating browser windows that open automatically when you visit a warez site. Usually contain voting portals or porn sites.
  • Port - A port is a term used when referring to FTP sites and is an essential extension of the address used to access them. If the port number of an FTP site isn't specified the default setting of 21 will automatically be used.
  • Pron - A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away someone posted a request for porn on a bulletin board, only, because of a typing error what he ended up asking for was "pron". Since then this has become a bit of a running joke and so it is now deliberately misspelt.
  • Proxy - A third party server which acts as an anonymous go between whenever you request a web page or contact a remote server. The message from your computer is first sent through the proxy server before being relayed to the final destination so that it appears as though the request has come from the IP address of the proxy server rather than you. Used when you wish to maintain your privacy on the net or speed up your connection (much more detailed info on this subject in the "more tips" section).
  • Psx - A quick way of referring to the Sony Playstation.
  • Pub - A free for all FTP site where anonymous access is permitted. They are usually used for transferring large files to many people because of their high speeds.
  • Pub Scanner - Someone who scours the net for anonymous access FTP sites which permit the creation and deletion of files. These are then exploited by uploading software for others to share.
  • Pub Stealer - Someone who posts the IP address of a public FTP site which they themselves have not built. Some pub stealers justify this by claiming that the elitism of private FXP groups discriminates against those people who do not have access, yet others simply post other people's work to try to claim the credit for themselves. Either way though, pub stealers are despised by the FXP groups and praised by those who would otherwise not have access to them.
  • Rar File - The first file in a series of compressed archives (the one you double click on to decompress all the files at once). Usually decompressed using a program called Winrar.
  • Release Groups - A group of people who are involved in cracking and / or ripping software and then repackaging it into easily downloadable segments.
  • Ratio - Two numbers separated by a semi-colon. Indicates how much data you must upload to an FTP site before you are permitted to download anything.
  • Reg File - Tiny file that adds essential configuration details into the registry.
  • Resume - The ability to stop and start downloading / uploading a file whenever you choose without having to start from the beginning again.
  • Rip - Software that has had all the non-essential gubbins removed to reduce its size. Videos and music are always the first casualties.
  • Raped - A release is branded with this term if it has been damaged beyond repair during the ripping process.
  • RM File - Shorthand for Real Media, a file format used to encode video sequences, which can only be played back using the "Real Player". Video clips produced using this format are not of the highest quality, but do have the advantage of a small file size.
  • ROM - Games which are designed for other platforms, but are played on the PC using an emulator.
  • Serial - A valid username and password that is saved as a basic text file and is used to register a shareware program and therefore remove all the restrictions.
  • Shareware - Try before you buy software downloaded from the net.
  • Spam - Unsolicited junk e-mail. Supposedly stands for "Stupid Person's Annoying Message".
  • Sponsor - To make some money webmasters can place adverts on their sites. Each time you click on these adverts or banners they get paid a few cents for bringing potential customers to the sponsors website.
  • Surfer Friendly (SF) - Surfer friendly sites supposedly have no blind links, pop-ups or porn banners. Don't be fooled by this label though as some sites will tell you fibs to get you to visit them.
  • Sys Op - The person who has the responsibility for running the computer from which an FTP site has been established. When warez is uploaded to public FTP sites and then suddenly goes "Missing In Action" you can often lay the blame at the door of the Sys Op who has an obligation to make sure his/her server stays within the boundaries of the law (i.e. warez free).
  • Tag / Tagged - This generally refers to the tagging of a pub. A FXP group uses a directory structure to claim it as their own. A general rule is that if a tag is 2 weeks old and not in use it has been abandoned.
  • Top List - Chart which lists in rank order the best warez sites. Worked out on the basis of votes.
  • Trading - Swapping warez, file for file via FTP, ICQ etc. Not usually approved of by the real warez community who believe that warez should be freely distributed. To put it simply, it is not the "warez way".
  • Trainer - A small, executable program which sits in your taskbar while you play a game. Hotkeys are associated with cheat commands so that when they are pressed you are given extra ammo, weapons, lives or the ability to toggle between invincible/mortal modes etc etc.
  • Trojans - Nasty virus like attachments which can be merged with executable files. These are tiny so are unlikely to arouse suspicion. When run they allow a hacker to access your computer and wreak havoc. Can occasionally be found in warez files.
  • UBB - Shorthand for Ultimate Bulletin Board, currently the most popular script used for creating warez bulletin boards.
  • UBB Hacks - This term falsely gives the impression that something destructive or malicious is involved, but when you hear people talking about a hack in the context of bulletin boards they are simply referring to code which helps to improve the functionality of a board. For example a "thread hack" would effect the way in which individual threads look and operate.
  • Undeletable Pub - An anonymous access, public FTP site where the permission attributes are set to allow uploads and downloads, but do not permit deletion.
  • Unzip - Unpacking or decompressing many files that have been stored in a single archive. Technically only used when talking about zip files.
  • Upload - Copying files from your computer to a web server or FTP site using a modem.
  • URL - Stands for "Uniform Resource Locator". The web site address you type into your browser.
  • VCD - Stands for Video Compact Disc. Basically these are huge movie files which can be viewed with the latest version of Media Player.
  • Voting - Members of the warez scene are very keen to reach the number one slot of top lists such as Voodoo, Top 60 etc. and will therefore encourage you to vote for their site to improve their position and get the credit they deserve (or not as the case may be!).
  • Warez - "Pirated" Full version software that is uploaded to the internet and is available for free download.
  • Warez Board - Bulletin board used by the warez community to share links and discuss anything related to warez.
  • Winace - Another utility used for decompressing all the common archive formats. Not great in my opinion. See below for a better one.
  • Wingate - Similar to a proxy in that they are used to hide your identity, except all information actually passes through the Wingate, if you have a slow Wingate you get slow download/upload speeds. Wingates are also used to force FXP transfer on pubs that do not normally accept FXP, again all data passes through the Wingate so you need one that is fast for it to be useful.
  • Winrar - Utility used for decompressing .rar files and much more.
  • Winzip - An essential tool used to decompress warez files.
  • Zip - A common compression format used to store warez.

Linux Tips and Tricks

Posted by X.E.R.O

Are you a linux geek ? Here are some indispensible linux tips and tricks which are must for new and experienced users alike.Lets have a look at them-More Linux Tips and tricks for geeks and newbies alike

Speeding up your hard drive

Get faster file transfer by using 32-bit transfers on your hard drive

Just add the line:

hdparm -c3 /dev/hdX

to a bootup script. If you use SuSE or other distros based on SYS V,

/sbin/init.d/boot.local

should work for you. This enables 32-bit transfer on your hard drive. On some systems it can improve transfer performance by 75%. To test your performance gain, type:

hdparm -t -T /dev/hdX

More DOS-like commands
Many people are moving to Linux because they miss the stability of good old DOS. In that light, many users are typing DOS commands (which originated from UNIX in the first place) that look fine but cause errors. The command "cd.." in DOS is perfectly valid, but Linux balks. This is because "cd" is a command, and any parameter for that command must be separated from the command by a space. The same goes for "cd/" and "cd~". A quick fix is here.

Use your favorite text editor in your home directory to edit the file ".bashrc". The period is there on purpose, this hides the file from normal ls display.

Add the lines:

alias cd/="cd /"
alias cd~="cd ~"
alias cd..="cd .."

And I usually add these...

alias md="mkdir"
alias rd="rmdir -i"
alias rm="rm -i"

and my first and still favorite alias...

alias ls="ls --color"

alias is a powerful tool, and can be used in the .bashrc script as well as from the command line. You can, if you want to spend the time, create your own group of shell commands to suit how you work. As long as you put them in your .bashrc file, they'll be there everytime you log in. Note that if you frequently log in as root, you might want to copy /home/username/.bashrc to /root/.bashrc to keep yourself sane.

Setting your timezone
The timezone under Linux is set by a symbolic link from /etc/localtime[1] to a file in the /usr/share/zoneinfo[2] directory that corresponds with what timezone you are in. For example, since I'm in South Australia, /etc/localtime is a symlink to /usr/share/zoneinfo/Australia/South. To set this link, type:

ln -sf ../usr/share/zoneinfo/your/zone /etc/localtime

Replace your/zone with something like Australia/NSW or Australia/Perth. Have a look in the directories under /usr/share/zoneinfo to see what timezones are available.

  1. This assumes that /usr/share/zoneinfo is linked to /etc/localtime as it is under Red Hat Linux.
  2. On older systems, you'll find that /usr/lib/zoneinfo is used instead of /usr/share/zoneinfo. See also the later section ``The time in some applications is wrong''.

How to do backup with tar ?
You can mantain a list of files that you with to backup into a file and tar it when you wish.

tar czvf tarfile.tar.gz -T list_file

where list_file is a simple list of what you want to include into the tar

i.e:

/etc/smb.conf
/root/myfile
/etc/ppp (all files into the /etc/ppp directory)
/opt/gnome/html/gnome-dev-info.html

How to keep a computer from answering to ping ?

a simple "echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/icmp_echo_ignore_all" will do the trick... to turn it back on, simply

"echo 0 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/icmp_echo_ignore_all"

Stay tuned for more tips and tricks.

Cheers

How To Backup Ps1/PS2 Games

Posted by X.E.R.O

Okay, these are some methods to backup PS2 titles and Xbox titles, in order to play a backup you need a modchip of How To Backup Ps1/PS2 Games some sort, I have also included a tutorial on boot methods. Follow any one of these instructions to fit your needs. You can tell what format the PS2 title is by looking at the written side of the disc, DVD's are Silver and CD's are Purple. The DVD backup methods here consist of reading the image to the hard drive then burning it to the media for an easier How To Backup Ps1/PS2 Games backup, this depends on your hardware and its setup. I say that because the proper setup would be to have the Reader and Writer on separate IDE cables. This allows no cross information when doing Disc to Disc/On the fly copying. But, since most people would not know how to check or fix this, I suggest reading the image to your Hard Drive and then burning from there. *A little useful trick*, If the DVD backup "image" is small enough in size you can fit it onto a CD-R (80 minute or larger if need be) instead of using a more expensive DVD-R. I have done this succesfully using Prassi and the first tutorial for it below. In addition a DVD Movie backup will play on a PS2/Xbox without a chip. As I get more info I will update.

PS1/PS2 CD backup tutorial

XBOX backup tutorials

Xbox original games are burned from the outside in. The only way to backup a title is to have a modchip like X-exuter (best), Enigma, or Xodus/Matrix. You also have to flash the bios and have a CD program inserted or installed into the X-Box named EVO-X (this allows you to assign the X-Box an IP address). The game has to be stored on the X-Box's HD, this allows you to file transfer the title to your PC using an ftp program like FlaxhFXP (best) or similar. From there you use a burning application to make the backup. Some applications allows you to "drag & drop" right from the Xbox or you can build an ISO of the image then burn to CD-R/W or DVD-R/W backup. (I will update this to show steps as soon as I have a minute)

10 Tips of security for PC users

Posted by X.E.R.O

Before you spend a dime on security, there are many precautions you can take that will protect you against the most common threats.  More security articles at security section

  1. Check Windows Update and Office Update regularly - have your Office CD ready. Windows Me, 2000, and XP users can configure automatic updates. Click on the Automatic Updates tab in the System control panel and choose the appropriate options.
  2. Install a personal firewall - Both SyGate and ZoneAlarm offer free versions.
  3. Install a free spyware blocker –Do yourself a favour, download SpyBot Search & Destroy . SpyBot is also paranoid and ruthless in hunting out tracking cookies.
  4. Block pop-up spam messages - In Windows NT, 2000, or XP by disabling the Windows Messenger service (this is unrelated to the instant messaging program) you can block spam messages. Open Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Services and you'll see Messenger. Right-click and go to Properties. Set Start-up Type to Disabled and press the Stop button. Bye-bye, spam pop-ups! Any good firewall will also stop them.
  5. Use strong passwords and change them periodically- Passwords should have at least seven characters; use letters and numbers and have at least one symbol. A decent example would be f8izKro@l. This will make it much harder for anyone to gain access to your accounts.
  6. Use Updated versions..Always -If you're using Outlook or Outlook Express, use the current version or one with the Outlook Security Update installed. The update and current versions patch numerous vulnerabilities.
  7. Buy antivirus software and keep it up to date - If you're not willing to pay, try Grisoft AVG Free Edition . And double-check your AV with the free, online-only scanners available at Panda software labs and Trendmicro
  8. If you have a wireless network, turn on the security features - Use MAC filtering, turn off SSID broadcast, and even use WEP with the biggest key you can get. For more, check out our wireless section or see the expanded coverage in Your Unwired World in our next issue.
  9. Join a respectable e-mail security list - such as the one used to found at Security Supersite Ziffdavis, so that you learn about emerging threats quickly and can take proper precautions.
  10. Be skeptical of things on the Internet - Don't assume that e-mail "From:" a particular person is actually from that person until you have further reason to believe it's that person. Don't assume that an attachment is what it says it is. Don't give out your password to anyone, even if that person claims to be from "support."

Keep learning and keep giving feedback.

Windows Vista Service Pack 2

Posted by X.E.R.O

Windows Vista Service Pack 2"We have news of the upcoming Service Pack 2 for Windows Vista! Microsoft is doing their best to rush out Service Pack 2 for Windows Vista so there will be additional incentive for folks to upgrade to Window Vista now, instead of waiting for Windows 7. So the latest schedule should come as no surprise.

A confidential source has revealed that Microsoft will deliver a Release Candidate in February, 2009 with the final SP2 binary scheduled for RTM (Release To Manufacturing) in April, 2009."

-TechARP.com

Microsoft released Windows Vista RTM at the end of January 2007, not counting the business launch of the operating system in November 2006. Vista SP1 was released to manufacturing on February 4, 2008 concomitantly with Windows Server 2008, but was only made available for download starting March 18. Now the Redmond company has already moved onward to Service Pack 2.
Microsoft’s goal is to deliver both SP2 releases before it delivers Windows 7 in order to lessen confusion among users as to whether to deploy Vista and Windows Server 2008 — or to wait for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 (a k a Windows 7 Server). Currently, Microsoft is believed to be attempting to RTM Windows 7 in the second half of 2009. The Softies have said Windows Server 2008 R2 is on track for 2010.
More Windows Vista Tips and Tricks - goto Windows Vista SectionAccording to Microsoft, Vista SP2 will include Windows Search 4, Bluetooth 2.1 wireless support, faster resume from sleep when a wireless connection has been broken and support for Blu-ray. Some of those features, including Windows Search and the Bluetooth support, have been available to Vista users for months through individual updates.

The service pack will update both Vista, the client version of Windows, and Windows Server 2008, the company's corresponding server software.

Vista SP2 will require SP1 as a prerequisite, a factor that played to Microsoft's ongoing recommendation that users deploy the first service pack as soon as possible.
